Heading back to school after summer vacation drudges up a whole slew of emotions for parents and kids alike. Kids worry about their new teacher(s), if their friends have changed over the summer, if they’ll be able to keep up with homework, and a whole list of other things. Parents have their own worries; financial concerns, fear over bullying, or managing extracurriculars and work schedules. Yes, back to school is an anxiety-ridden time for all involved. So, how do you help your kids navigate that anxiety? Here are a few tips:

Handle the Basics:

Lack of sleep and poor eating habits only increase anxiety and stress so make sure everyone is taking care of themselves in that regard. Encourage your child to develop a healthy routine. When things are predictable it’s less scary.

Encourage Open Conversations:

Allow your child to talk with you about their anxieties. Avoidance of school will only increase and reinforce your child’s fears over the long-term, and make it increasingly more difficult to attend so it’s crucial that your child works through their fears.

Acknowledge Their Fear:

When parents try to reassure their children by saying things like, “don’t worry” or “everything will be fine,” it can actually feel like a dismissal of sorts. Instead, attempt to help your child assess the evidence and help them handle the situation. Ask things that will help your kids take action against their fear.

Focus on the Positive:

Support your children by encouraging them to focus on the positive things they know to be true. What are your child’s strengths in school? Help them focus on that. By helping them change their mindset you can help them alleviate some of that anxiety.

Pay attention to their behavior as the year progresses. Typically, after a bit of time, that general anxiety will go away. If your child is still exhibiting signs of anxiety as the year progresses, it might be a good idea to speak with a healthcare professional.

Remember, if you’re stressed and worried your child will feel that as well. By taking care of yourself you’ll help your child as well!
