People respond differently to frightening or dangerous experiences. Some people are more prone to freezing, while others will fight or take flight. There isn’t a right or wrong way to respond. And, your response does not belittle what happened.
After a traumatic event, it’s essential to know that you are not alone. There are resources available to help you process what happened.
What is trauma?
Trauma happens when you experience or witness a deeply distressing or disturbing event or physical injury. The person experiencing the trauma often feels threatened. There are three main types of trauma – acute, chronic, and complex.
Acute trauma is usually from a single distressing event. Chronic trauma is when a person is exposed to multiple, long-term traumatic events. And complex trauma is exposure to numerous disturbing events, often within the context of interpersonal relationships.
Trauma can come from many different places, including bullying, violence, sexual abuse, or disasters to name a few.
You are not alone
It is estimated that 70 percent of adults in the United States have experienced a traumatic event at least once in their lifetime.
After traumatic events
When a traumatic event happens, it is best to talk to a mental health professional as soon as possible. It may seem easier to put a bandaid on the wound, but that won’t fix the root of the problem, and the issue will likely get bigger if it’s not taken care of right away.
At Doctor’s Park Mental Health Center, one of our specialties is working with adults, families, and children who have experienced traumatic events. We understand that no two situations are the same, and we approach each situation with a unique plan.
When it comes to trauma, we have found that Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and/or Brainspotting are effective ways for children, adults, couples, and families to process traumatic events and regain their lives. Both are evidence-based practices and used for the treatment of trauma.
If you or someone in your family has experienced a traumatic event, it’s never too late to reach out to a professional for help. You are not alone, and Doctor’s Park Mental Health Center would love to help you work through the event and regain your life. Reach out to us today to schedule an appointment.
