We are living in a unique time. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused increases in anxiety and depression in many people. These can present themselves in many forms. You feel like all eyes are on you, question every move you make, are unable to sleep at night, feel easily irritated by those you love most, and struggle to think about anything other than the fear you are experiencing. This leads to feeling alone and misunderstood.

If you’re finding yourself disconnected from your family, friends, and life due to anxiety or depression, it’s important to know that this is not how your story ends. This doesn’t have to be how you live your life. By working on your inner thoughts and feelings, you can improve confidence, decrease anxiety, and feel better about being you. Even though many individuals are back in-office and stores are reopening as the lockdown lifts, uncertainties abound. It’s necessary that we find a way to work through our struggles and find peace during this difficult time by using several techniques.

Self-Care

One of the best things you can do during the pandemic, especially if you are still working from home and feeling anxious, is to practice self-care. That means different things to everyone. Perhaps for you it means putting your cell phone on silent for one hour every night while you take a bubble bath. Meditating after waking up and setting your intentions for the day is a great way to shift focus to the positive. This also means making sure you are eating enough, sleeping enough, and getting good exercise.

Yoga

Yoga has incredible benefits. Not only will it help you feel better physically, it will help you to slow down and shift the focus to your breathing. It can be incredibly relaxing and a great way to quell anxiety.

Strengthening Relationships

Our community may be under strict social distancing orders which limits the ability to spend time in large groups.  This doesn’t mean you have to live in isolation. It may require more effort, but pour into your friendships and other relationships. Schedule regular times to speak with your family and friends or ask them to reach out to you. Try a phone call, a video chat, or a calming walk together as you maintain social distance.

Adopt a New Hobby

A great way to turn focus from anxiety and depressive thoughts is to try something new. Start mastering new recipes, take up a new workout routine, pick up a puzzle, find ways to enjoy nature, or start crafting. Creating something is a great way to put your focus and energy into something positive.

Slow things down. Direct your attention to the things you enjoy and that bring you inner peace.
